Event summary

North and Far North Tropical Low Commencing 29 January 2025

This event has seen record-breaking flood conditions in North and Far North Queensland. The Queensland Government has moved to ensure flood-affected communities get the help they need through the joint State-Commonwealth Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA).

Activation summary

In response to the North and Far North Tropical Low Commencing 29 January 2025 event, assistance has been activated for impacted communities. The activation summary provides an up-to-date view of funding available within impacted LGAs.

Financial assistance and exceptional circumstances

Townsville floods - Aplins Weir
A growing number of local government areas have been activated for the North and Far North Tropical Low for various funding assistance measures for individuals, primary producers, small business and not-for-profits.

Jointly funded DRFA exceptional circumstances package to support clean up and recovery for North and Far North Queensland's vital industry, farmers, small businesses and not-for-profits.
Stronger resilient home builder
The Stronger Homes Grant Program allows flood-affected homeowners in North and Far North Queensland access to grants to help rebuild their homes for long-term flood resilience.

Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements

The joint Australian, state and territory governments’ Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA) provide a range of financial assistance to the natural disaster-declared areas in each state or territory.

Recovery operation

The recovery operation for this event will include: 

  • preparation of a business case for extraordinary assistance under the DRFA
  • offers of support from QRA Recovery and Resilience Officers (RROs) to eligible councils to help develop event specific local recovery plans
  • QRA as lead recovery agency liaising with Functional Recovery Groups to ensure appropriate state recovery planning.

QRA is working closely with councils to offer support to develop event specific local recovery plans that will be available following endorsement by councils.

Recovery update e-newsletter

This Recovery Update is from the Queensland Reconstruction Authority (QRA), lead state agency responsible for disaster recovery and resilience, to support LGAs activated for Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA) following the North and Far North Tropical Low event. It is distributed to council CEOs, mayors, Local Disaster Management Groups, District Disaster Management Groups, council and state agency disaster management practitioners from the LGAs impacted by the event, and subscribers.
