North Queensland’s transition from flood response to recovery has been boosted with the appointment of Andrew Cripps as Queensland State Recovery Coordinator.

North Queensland’s worsening flood crisis has called for extra disaster assistance in the region, with more residents now eligible for hardship payments.

An $8 million funding kick-start from the Australian and Queensland Governments will boost the clean-up and early recovery efforts of communities impacted by north Queensland’s flood emergency.

Financial assistance is available for flood affected residents in another 26 localities across the Townsville local government area, and for two additional north Queensland councils.

Flood affected north Queensland primary producers, small businesses and not-for-profits can now apply for loans to aid their recovery.

As a tropical low continues to bring torrential downpours to north Queensland, the Australian and Queensland Governments have activated disaster payments for eligible residents.

Concessional loans are now available for flood affected businesses and not-for-profits in the South Burnett local government area.

Townsville City Council and Burdekin Shire Council are the latest Queensland local governments to be activated for disaster assistance following heavy summer downpours.

Another $200 million is available through the Australian Government's flagship $1 billion disaster risk reduction initiative, with councils, state agencies and non-government organisations invited to submit potential projects and initiatives.

Financial assistance is now available to five councils in the Wide Bay-Burnett region affected by heavy rain and flooding during December.
