The $3.5 million National Park Recovery Program will help Queensland’s Department of Environment and Science (DES) manage impacts and threats to iconic national parks and World Heritage areas in the state’s north-west.
The program will help build resilience and sustainability for the region so future disaster impacts are reduced, and in doing so will strengthen the key sectors like tourism that these communities rely on.
DES will rehabilitate, repair and increase the resilience of flood damaged walking trails and infrastructure within the Boodjamulla (Lawn Hill) National Park and Wiliyan-ngurru National Park, and help maintain the inherent ecological processes and historical and cultural values of these areas.
The objectives of the Boodjamulla (Lawn Hill National Park) funding are to:
- restore park assets such as huts, access tracks (including concreted) and paths to day-use areas including visitor site area and camping areas to allow re-opening for tourism
- help maintain the inherent ecological processes and historical and cultural values on park
- directly and indirectly supporting employment and economic recovery by mitigating risk of future flooding impacts
- ensure the protection and management of park values so current and future generations can enjoy and learn.
Program stages
The overall $15 million Environmental Recovery Program will be delivered over two stages.
The $3.5 million National Park Recovery Program will be delivered across both Stage 1 and Stage 2,

Funding acknowledgement
The $3.5 million National Park Recovery Program is jointly funded by the Australian and Queensland Governments to support Queensland communities in their recovery from Northern and Central Queensland Monsoon and Flooding, 20 December 2022 - 30 April 2023.
