Flood resilience upgrades future-proof Ingham Substation
Ingham’s critical infrastructure is significantly more flood resilient following delivery of $1.61 million in flood mitigation upgrades to the town’s main source of power.
This first stage of the Ingham Substation resilience project has seen vital power supply equipment repositioned above the peak flood height experienced in February 2025.
The marshalling boxes raised act as central connection points for wiring and signals from various high-voltage equipment such as transformers, circuit breakers and current transformers.
These enhancements will reduce the likelihood of the substation being de-energised during severe flood events, protecting local homes and businesses from mass power outages.
Stage one of the Ingham Substation resilience project was funded through Queensland efficiencies realised under the joint Commonwealth-state Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA).
The DRFA is a proven national funding mechanism designed to support communities as they recover from and build resilience to disaster events.
The substation upgrades follow one of the worst flooding events to ever impact Ingham when the town was inundated following the North and Far North Tropical Low of January and February 2025.
Work has been delivered in close collaboration between Ergon Energy and Hinchinbrook Shire Council and represents a huge step forward in terms of protecting Ingham’s vital community infrastructure.
As Ingham prepares for the upcoming wet season, these works should provide peace of mind for the community.
The Queensland Reconstruction Authority sees resilience-building as a vital endeavour to ensure places like Ingham are better equipped to withstand and recover from future extreme weather.
